Hellebore Ice 'n' Roses Rose

Hellebore Ice 'n' Roses Rose is a stunning early-flowering perennial that brings much-needed colour to the winter and early spring garden. This captivating variety produces elegant blooms in shades of pink and rose, often with delicate picotee edges and contrasting darker veining. As a member of the hellebore family, it's renowned for its resilience and ability to thrive in challenging conditions where many other plants struggle.

Key Features

This exceptional hellebore offers gardeners a wealth of attractive qualities. The flowers are typically 5-8cm across, with five petal-like sepals that create a charming, nodding display. The blooms emerge from January through to April, providing colour when the garden is otherwise dormant. The evergreen foliage is deeply divided and leathery, maintaining its handsome appearance throughout the year and providing excellent ground cover even after flowering has finished.

Growing Conditions

Hellebore Ice 'n' Rose is remarkably accommodating and thrives in partial to full shade, making it ideal for those tricky spots beneath trees or along north-facing borders. It prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, though it's surprisingly tolerant once established. This hellebore is hardy to -15°C, so it will sail through British winters without any fuss. It performs best in neutral to alkaline soil but will adapt to slightly acidic conditions.

Planting and Care

Plant your hellebore in autumn or early spring, spacing them approximately 45cm apart. Dig in plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before planting to give them the best start. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, but once settled, they're remarkably drought-tolerant.

Remove any tatty or damaged leaves in late winter before the flower buds emerge to show off the blooms to best effect. After flowering, allow the seed heads to develop if you'd like the plant to self-seed naturally. Apply a generous mulch of compost or leaf mould around the base each spring to feed the plant and retain moisture.

Garden Uses

Hellebore Ice 'n' Rose is wonderfully versatile in the garden. Plant it in woodland settings beneath deciduous trees, where it will naturalise beautifully over time. It's equally at home in shaded borders, alongside ferns, hostas, and spring bulbs. The nodding flowers are particularly effective when planted on a slope or in raised beds where you can admire them from below. They also make excellent companions for snowdrops, cyclamen, and early-flowering pulmonarias.

Wildlife Value

Despite flowering in the depths of winter, hellebores are valuable for early-emerging bumblebees and other pollinators searching for nectar. The flowers provide an essential food source when little else is available, making them an important addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Special Considerations

All parts of hellebores are toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals, so wear gloves when handling the plant and keep it away from curious pets and children. The plants dislike being disturbed once established, so choose your planting position carefully and leave them to mature undisturbed.

Size and Spread

Expect Hellebore Ice 'n' Rose to reach approximately 30-45cm in height with a similar spread, forming attractive clumps that gradually increase in size over the years.

Why Choose Ice 'n' Rose?

This hellebore variety offers exceptional winter interest with minimal maintenance requirements. Its reliable flowering, evergreen foliage, and shade tolerance make it an invaluable addition to any garden. Once established, it will reward you with years of beautiful blooms, gradually forming impressive clumps that signal the end of winter and the promise of spring.

Buying Perennials from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our perennials after flowering and trim them back at the end of the season to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy perennials, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

From late autumn onwards and dependent on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Perennials are described and classified differently by different gardeners but all would agree that they are plants that come into flower every year from early spring to late summer, the exact time dependent on variety and most die back to ground level in autumn and winter.

As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.

It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.

Always check eventual plant heights when planning borders to ensure that the taller plants are at the back (or at the centre of an island bed) followed by the medium and then smaller low growing plants.

Remember to deadhead perennials after flowering, trim back lightly in autumn as required to tidy the border and if necessary trim again in spring once the risk of heavy frost has passed.

If perennials get too big, start to flower less and less or if it seems to be dying off from the centre, consider dividing the plant but always check that the particular variety is happy to be divided and that you divide at the right time of year for the plant.

By using this simple guide and a little time, perennials can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
