Berberis Orange Rocket is a distinctive deciduous shrub prized for its striking upright columnar growth habit and brilliant orange foliage that transforms through the seasons. This hardy barberry cultivar combines architectural form with vibrant colour, making it an exceptional choice for gardeners seeking vertical interest and year-round appeal in their landscape design.
Upright Columnar Form: Narrow, vertical growth habit ideal for tight spaces
Brilliant Orange Foliage: Intense orange-red leaves that deepen through autumn
Space-Efficient: Reaches 1.5-2 metres tall but only 60-80cm wide
Architectural Structure: Provides strong vertical lines in garden design
Hardy and Reliable: Excellent disease resistance and cold tolerance
Thorny Stems: Natural protection against browsing animals
Light Requirements
Berberis Orange Rocket thrives in full sun to partial shade, with the most intense orange colouration developing in sunny positions. A minimum of 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily ensures optimal foliage colour and compact growth habit.
Soil Preferences
Soil Type: Adapts to most well-draining soils including clay, loam, and sandy conditions
pH Range: Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0-7.5)
Drainage: Essential requirement - avoid waterlogged or poorly draining sites
Fertility: Performs well in average garden soils; excessive fertility may reduce colour intensity
Climate Tolerance
Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS Hardiness H6)
Temperature Range: Withstands temperatures down to -25°C
Wind Resistance: Good tolerance to wind once established; upright form provides natural wind resistance
Best Planting Times
Potted berberis can be planted at any time of year, providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and its not excessively windy.
Spacing and Positioning
Specimen Planting: Allow 1-1.5 metres from other plants to showcase form
Hedging: Space 80cm-1 metre apart for formal hedge screening
Narrow Spaces: Ideal for planting between buildings or along boundaries
Planting Method
Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal depth
Improve heavy clay soils with coarse grit or organic matter for drainage
Position the plant at the same level as it was growing in the container
Backfill with improved native soil, firming gently as you go
Water thoroughly and apply 5cm mulch around the base, avoiding the stem
Watering Schedule
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, Orange Rocket is drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells, particularly in sandy soils.
Feeding Requirements
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. An annual application of compost around the base provides adequate nutrition. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which may encourage soft growth and reduce the intensity of autumn colour.
Pruning Guidance
Timing: Prune lightly after flowering in late spring if necessary
Technique: Minimal pruning required due to naturally neat growth habit
Shaping: Light trimming to maintain columnar form if desired
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to prevent self-seeding if preferred
Safety: Always wear thick gloves and protective clothing due to sharp thorns
Orange Rocket demonstrates excellent natural resistance to common pests and diseases. Ensure adequate air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent any potential issues.
Design Uses
Vertical Accent: Creates strong upright lines in mixed borders
Narrow Spaces: Perfect for tight spots between buildings or along paths
Formal Hedging: Forms an attractive tall, narrow hedge

Growth Rate: Moderate, reaching full size in 4-5 years

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.
Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.
