Weigela plants
Weigela are attractive, deciduous small to medium-sized shrubs producing masses of delicate, trumpet-shaped, pinkish-white flowers in spring and sporadically through summer. These are highly attractive to bees and butterflies and set off beautifully against the backdrop of often purple or variegated foliage. Weigela is an old-favourite with beautiful, arching stems that should be given plenty of space to be fully appreciated. Hardy, easy to grow and care free, they are valued as specimen or border plants, edging along borders or pathways or foundation plants near your home. They also work well in containers to add colour and interest to a patio, balcony or decked area and are very suitable for beginners. Weigela bloom most abundantly in full sun but will also tolerate light shade. Prune annually after flowering to maintain their shape, removing any congested or crossing branches in more mature shrubs. Choose Weigela Red Prince as an all-round reliable performer and RHS Award of Garden Merit winner producing masses of scarlet blooms. Alternatively, Weigela florida ‘Follis Purpureis’ has stunning rich purple foliage, especially when grown in full sun and Weigela florida ‘Nana Variegata’ offers colour and interest with its attractively edged creamy-yellow foliage.
