The back of a mixed or shrub border is best reserved for tall-growing plants whose presence will not be overshadowed by the small and mid-sized varieties growing in front of them. Borders are best planted in layers (taller plants at the back, stepping down to smaller ones at the front) and with a mix of deciduous and evergreen varieties. This gives a three-dimensional effect for maximum visual impact and will help your garden look beautiful through the seasons. Evergreens will retain their leaves all year round, providing a permanent framework for your garden, while deciduous shrubs will produce a beautiful autumnal display when they shed their leaves in the autumn. Choose plants that flower at different times of the year and consider selecting a mix of wildlife attracting plants and those with interesting variegated foliage, vibrant bark and winter berries.
