Browse our range of the best trees for growing in pots and containers, perfect for naturalising patio or decked areas, court-yards, balconies or driveways with colourful foliage, flowers, berries or even edible fruit. Trees bring height, structure and permanency to your outdoor space with the best trees for containers generally being smaller, slowing growing or dwarf varieties - more vigorous trees will outgrow their pot too quickly. Give some thought to whether you would prefer a single-stemmed tree such as topiary lollipops, which work well in pairs either side of a doorway to frame the entrance, or a multi-branched tree with several trunks growing from near the base. Keep in mind that fruit trees are grafted onto a rootstock, which controls their vigour and eventual size. Whatever tree you choose, you’ll want to re-pot it either into a larger container or at least with fresh compost every 4-5 years to keep it healthy.
