Shrubs for containers
Shop our range of the best shrubs for growing in pots and containers. Shrubs can both bring their own ornamental features such as colourful foliage, flowers, berries and seed pods, as well as providing a useful backdrop to showy flowering perennials and annuals. Growing shrubs in containers will save you having to refresh your displays every spring or autumn and they work well in smaller spaces such as patios, decked areas, skirting driveways or even urban balconies. Shrubs can be grown as standalone specimens in their own container, or combined with flowering perennials, bedding plants, dwarf conifers or perhaps a trailing ivy cascaded over the side in a mixed display. Some shrubs are better suited to growing in a container than others, so careful planning and preparation is key. Practical considerations include eventual height and spread, whether to choose an evergreen or deciduous variety, how they will contrast and balance other plants in the display and what type of compost they prefer. Consider not only their best features (blooms, berries, etc) and when they occur but also what they look like for the rest of the year – you’ll probably want to incorporate some evergreen shrubs into any containers that will be given pride of place all year round, for example.
