Plants for a Roof Garden
If you live in a property without a garden, developing a roof garden is the perfect way to create your own little Eden. Plants for a roof garden need to be resilient, able to withstand wind and frost and ideally low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. One method is to use tough plants around the edge as a screen, effectively creating a microclimate in the middle where other plants can survive. Browse some of the best varieties in this section, including a range of alpines, shrubs, perennials and trees. Sedum make excellent roof garden plants with their unusually shaped, thick, succulent foliage, fleshy stems and star-shaped flowers in tight clusters. Achillea plants are also popular as a reliable, hardy, long-flowering herbaceous perennial producing masses of bright or pastel flowers from summer through autumn. Always carefully consider building restrictions, design and construction, local environmental conditions, irrigation and maintenance before embarking on a roof garden project.
