Sedum perennial plants

Sedum plants are beautiful, perennial succulents, producing masses of star-shaped flowers in shades of reds, pinks, whites and yellows through summer and autumn, above an attractive mound of thick leaves and fleshy stems. They can be split into low-growing mat-forming varieties, reaching no more than 15-20cm high and perfect for the rock garden, ground cover or gracefully cascading down a stone wall; and upright sedums that develop into tall clumps, ideal for the flower garden or mixed border. Tall sedums were traditionally grown for their colourful flowers and symmetrical form with newer varieties also featuring attractive foliage in beautiful shades of copper, dark purple and dusky mauve. Low growing sedums are also great draped over the edge of a hanging basket to provide a naturalistic, cascading appearance. All varieties are attractive to birds and well-loved by pollinators. Hardy and easy to grow, sedums will thrive in the least hospitable conditions including poor soil and are in fact commonly known as Stonecrop as gardeners joke that only stones need less care and live longer. Once the active growing season is over, reduce watering to prevent winter rot.
