Spruce trees are timeless woodland staples that are both spectacular and easy to grow. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes from dwarf varieties to small or even very large trees with foliage colours spanning various shades of greens and blues. Spruce conifers are a member of the wider pine family with needles held singly, attached to the branch by a tiny peg (pulvinus) with seed cones that hang from the branches when mature and fall intact from the tree. New growth is often paler than mature foliage, producing a stunning two-tone appearance that is as showy as any spring flower. Blue spruce conifers contrast effectively with the purple foliage of Smoke Bush (Cotinus) in the background; whilst Norway Spruce is a large-growing, graceful specimen best known for its use as a Christmas tree since Victorian times. Most of the Spruce conifers we stock are dwarf or smaller growers, which tend to be most suitable in the garden environment.
