Best plants for cut flowers (cutting garden)
Blooms freshly cut straight from the garden into a vase can instantly transform a house to a home. We think anyone who loves cut flowers should consider growing some of their own. It doesn’t have to be in a designated cutting garden, they could be mixed amongst other varieties in the border or grown in containers on a patio or balcony. Simply incorporate flowers and foliage into your borders in a way that won’t affect the overall appearance of your borders when cut. Most cut flowers prefer full sun but a few will tolerant light shade. Some good choices include dianthus, peonies and hybrid tea roses with flower bulbs used to extend the picking season. Dianthus (or pinks) are prized for their beautiful blooms with a serrated-edged petals and a delicious spicy fragrance. Peonies are have large, luxurious, fluffy flowers in a wide range of colours, while the beautiful, aromatic, silvery-blue stems of eucalyptus gunnii makes an excellent foliage backdrop to showier flowers.
