Fargesia bamboo plants
Fargesia are graceful, clump-forming bamboo plants with an elegant, exotic appearance, perfect for adding movement and texture to borders and containers. Also known as umbrella bamboo or fountain bamboo, it maintains a consistently bushy growth habit including at the base and provides an excellent, year-round focal point with its tall, fresh canes. The new canes emerge a bright green, which contrast well with the bamboo sheaths, creating an attractive two-tone effect until the sheaths drop away. Fargesia are very hardy and can be used to create a fast growing informal hedge of between 2.5 and 4 metres, growing up to 60cm taller each year. They’re also effective in the sensory garden where you can hear the canes gently sway and foliage rustle in the breeze. Clump-forming bamboos have a root mass like normal ornamental grasses, spreading gradually out from the centre and never springing up canes more than 10-15cm from the existing plant. Water well until established and cut back spindly canes in spring.
