Shop all alpine plants
Alpines are delightful plants, originating from mountainous alpine regions at high elevation, above the tree level. Well suited to coping with exposed sites and cold winters, they have been enjoying renewed popularity recently for the rock garden, containers and the front of well drained borders. Alpines enjoy plenty of sunlight and will reward you with charming flowers and attractive foliage. Grow them in groups of the same variety in odd numbers to create a harmonious tapestry of colour. Low maintenance and easy to grow, they are extremely winter hardy, often covered by snow for long periods of time in the wild, and able to cope with unabating direct sunlight on hot summer days. Choose Arabis for shapely plants with delicate flowers or Aubrieta for a trailing or spreading variety which creates a stunning sea of colour when in bloom. Alternatively, Saxifraga is able to grow almost anywhere including amongst rocks, while Sedums deserve a place in every garden for their interesting, succulent foliage.
