Exceptional Colour Evolution

'Wim's Red' delivers one of the most spectacular colour transformations in the hydrangea world. The flowers emerge creamy-white in July and gradually turn pink before finally intensifying to a rich wine-red as they mature. This remarkable progression provides months of changing interest, ensuring the shrub remains a focal point throughout the growing season. The transformation is particularly striking in hot summers and autumn conditions, when the wine-red colouring becomes most intense.

Distinctive Fragrance Appeal

Unlike many hydrangeas, 'Wim's Red' offers the added delight of honey-scented flowerheads that fill your garden with sweet fragrance throughout the flowering season. This makes it particularly valuable for positioning near seating areas, pathways, or windows where the scent can be fully appreciated.

Robust Architectural Structure

The strong, claret red stems provide excellent structural support for the substantial flower heads, ensuring they remain upright even in wet weather conditions. The strong upright stems don't flop in wet weather, making this variety particularly reliable for British gardens. The red-stemmed branches add architectural interest even when not in bloom, providing ornamental value throughout the growing season.

Outstanding Flower Performance

The impressive 30cm (12 inch) long flowerheads create a magnificent display that commands attention in any garden setting. The large, conical flower clusters form at the tips of branches, creating an elegant display that provides substantial garden impact whilst maintaining the distinctive panicle hydrangea form that gardeners love.

Flexible Size Management

This variety naturally reaches 2-3m (6-10ft) in height if left unpruned, but can be maintained at smaller sizes through regular pruning. May display best shrub form if regularly pruned to a height of 6-10 feet tall, providing excellent flexibility for different garden situations. This adaptability makes it suitable for both large landscape applications and smaller garden spaces.

Exceptional Cut Flower Performance

The distinctive colour-changing blooms make exceptional cut flowers, both fresh and dried, providing valuable material for indoor arrangements throughout the flowering season. The progression from white through pink to wine-red offers multiple colour options for floral displays, whilst the honey fragrance adds an extra dimension to indoor arrangements.

Excellent Hedge and Screen Potential

Perfect for creating an informal, flowering hedge that provides privacy with spectacular seasonal colour and fragrance. The upright, bushy habit and substantial size make it ideal for boundary plantings and screening applications, whilst the strong stems ensure reliability in exposed positions.

Growing Requirements

  • Soil and Position: Best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Thrives in moist, well-drained soil with good organic content. Choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade for optimal colour development and fragrance production.
  • Light Requirements: Performs well in full sun to partial shade, with partial shade being preferable during hot summer periods to protect the delicate colour transitions and maintain flower quality. Morning sun with afternoon shade often provides ideal conditions for optimal colour development.
  • Soil Preferences: Unlike mophead hydrangeas, soil pH does not affect bloom colour, as the colour changes are genetically programmed rather than pH-dependent. However, enriching the soil with organic matter will support better growth and flower production.

Care and Maintenance

  • Pruning Requirements: Bloom occurs on current season's growth, so prune as needed in late winter to early spring. For compact growth, prune back to 30-40cm above the ground each March, or leave unpruned for larger specimens. The flexible pruning requirements allow gardeners to tailor the size to their specific needs.
  • Watering Requirements: Maintain consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly during establishment. After planting, ensure adequate moisture levels to support the development of the substantial flower heads and maintain fragrance production.
  • Fertilising Programme: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring and supplement with organic matter to support the spectacular colour-changing flower production and enhance fragrance development throughout the growing season.

Design Applications

  • Mixed Borders: Perfect for adding late summer colour and fragrance to the shrub border, where its colour-changing blooms provide extended seasonal interest. The progression from white through pink to wine-red complements virtually any colour scheme.
  • Specimen Plantings: Excellent as a standalone specimen where the spectacular colour transformation and honey fragrance can be fully appreciated. The substantial size and distinctive flowers make it perfect for creating dramatic focal points.
  • Hedge and Screen Plantings: Ideal for creating informal, flowering hedges that provide privacy whilst delivering spectacular seasonal colour and fragrance. The upright habit and substantial size make it excellent for boundary applications.
  • Contemporary Gardens: The clean lines and reliable colour performance make it perfect for contemporary garden designs where predictable seasonal interest is valued alongside architectural form and sensory appeal.

Seasonal Interest

  • Summer Spectacle: From July through September, the shrub becomes adorned with creamy-white conical blooms that begin their remarkable colour transformation whilst filling the garden with honey fragrance, providing continuous visual and sensory interest.
  • Autumn Transformation: As the season progresses, the flowers develop pink tones that gradually deepen to rich wine-red shades, providing extended colour interest well into autumn with continued fragrance production.
  • Winter Architecture: The strong red stems and dried flower heads provide attractive winter structure, particularly effective when flower heads are left for architectural interest and wildlife value.

Hardiness and Reliability

This is one of the most winter hardy of the hydrangeas, making it exceptionally reliable for British gardens. The variety thrives in urban conditions, making it suitable for town gardens and challenging growing environments where other plants might struggle.

Mature Size Expectations

After 3-4 years, the hydrangea will reach a width of 1.5-2m and height of 2-3m with proper care. The exact size will vary depending on pruning practices, allowing gardeners to customise the final dimensions to suit their specific requirements and garden scale.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

* Please Note: Shrubs in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
