Transform your garden with Hydrangea paniculata 'Bobo', a stunning dwarf panicle hydrangea that delivers spectacular white cone-shaped blooms throughout summer and autumn. This exceptional compact shrub combines remarkable reliability with outstanding ornamental appeal, producing abundant flower clusters that transform from pure white to soft pink whilst providing months of continuous colour in even the smallest gardens.
'Bobo' produces abundant white cone-shaped blooms in summer that are positively engulfing, creating a dramatic display that outshines most other flowering shrubs. The impressive 15-20cm long panicles feature densely packed florets with a lacy appearance that lends elegance to both formal and informal garden settings.
The flowers begin as pure white in midsummer, gradually developing a soft pink blush as the season progresses, providing an extended period of changing colour interest. This natural progression ensures the shrub remains visually striking throughout its flowering period, offering two distinct colour phases in a single season.
'Bobo' grows only 2 to 3 feet high and slightly wider, making it the ideal solution for gardeners who love panicle hydrangeas but lack space for larger varieties. This makes it an excellent foundation shrub or short hedge, perfect for smaller gardens, containers, and front-of-border plantings.
'Bobo' is super cold tolerant, and tends to perform its best in cooler climates, making it exceptionally well-suited to British growing conditions. Because Paniculata Hydrangeas bloom on new growth, they typically flower normally even if the twigs have been killed back by frost, ensuring reliable blooming every year.
The flowers make excellent cuts, both fresh and dried, providing valuable material for indoor arrangements and crafts. The sturdy stems and long-lasting blooms make this variety particularly valuable for gardeners who enjoy bringing their garden indoors.
An excellent foundation shrub or short hedge, 'Bobo' adapts beautifully to various garden roles. The compact size and reliable performance make it perfect for mixed borders, specimen plantings, and container cultivation where space is at a premium.
The blooms are pollinator-friendly, attracting butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects throughout the extended flowering period. The abundant nectar-rich florets provide valuable food sources during the crucial late-summer period when many other flowers have finished.
The compact size and spectacular flower display make 'Bobo' perfectly suited to container cultivation. Ideal for patios, balconies, and courtyards where moveable colour is desired, it provides the impact of a full-sized hydrangea in a space-efficient package.
Best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers good, loamy soil but is adaptable to many soils with moderate moisture required. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root problems whilst maintaining consistent moisture.
Prefers full sun to partial shade, ideally receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal blooming. Afternoon shade in hot summer climates is recommended, making it adaptable to various garden positions whilst ensuring maximum flower production.
To prune, simply cut back by one-third of its total height every spring, just as new growth begins to emerge on stems. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain compact size and encourage abundant flowering on new growth.
Fertilise in spring and mid-summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support the extended flowering period and maintain healthy growth throughout the growing season.
Requires consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly during dry spells. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root development, ensuring the soil never becomes waterlogged.
Excellent as a foundation shrub, 'Bobo' provides year-round structure with spectacular summer colour. The compact size ensures it won't outgrow its space or obstruct windows whilst providing maximum ornamental impact.
Perfect for front-of-border positions where its compact size and abundant blooms provide consistent colour. The white flowers complement virtually any colour scheme, making it an invaluable addition to mixed plantings.
Makes an excellent short hedge, creating defined garden boundaries whilst providing spectacular seasonal colour. Space plants 90-120cm apart for hedge planting to allow for mature spread.
The clean lines and reliable performance make it ideal for contemporary garden designs where low maintenance and consistent results are priorities. Works beautifully in geometric plantings and modern landscaping schemes.
Summer Display: From July through August, the shrub becomes completely covered in pristine white cone-shaped blooms, creating a spectacular focal point that brightens any garden space.
Autumn Colour: As temperatures cool, the flowers develop soft pink tones whilst retaining their structural integrity, providing extended colour interest well into autumn.
Winter Structure: The bare stems provide attractive winter structure, particularly when flower heads are left for architectural interest and wildlife value.
This hydrangea variety is highly adaptable, thriving across a wide range of hardiness zones, making it exceptionally reliable in British growing conditions. The combination of cold tolerance and heat adaptation ensures consistent performance across various climatic conditions.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Bobo' represents the perfect solution for gardeners seeking the spectacular display of panicle hydrangeas in a compact, manageable package. The combination of abundant white blooms, reliable performance, and compact size creates a shrub that delivers maximum impact with minimal space requirements.
This award-winning variety offers outstanding value for gardeners seeking low-maintenance shrubs that provide dramatic seasonal colour. Whether used as foundation plantings, in mixed borders, or as specimen plants, 'Bobo' provides the perfect balance of ornamental appeal, wildlife value, and garden reliability that makes it an essential addition to any garden seeking spectacular summer colour with year-round structural interest.
Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.
Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.
Planting and Conditions
Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.
Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.
One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.
Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.
Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.
Aftercare and Pruning
Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.
Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.
Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.
All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.
Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.
To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.
Potential Issues
Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.
This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.
To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
