Helianthemum 'Cerise Queen' - Rock Rose, Sun Rose

Overview

Helianthemum 'Cerise Queen' is a spectacular low-growing evergreen shrub that brings vibrant colour to sunny gardens with its profusion of bright cerise-pink flowers. This hardy rock rose creates stunning carpets of colour throughout the summer months, combining exceptional drought tolerance with outstanding ornamental appeal. The rich pink blooms, set against attractive grey-green foliage, make this cultivar one of the most eye-catching members of the helianthemum family. Perfect for rockeries, Mediterranean gardens, and challenging dry sites, 'Cerise Queen' offers months of reliable colour with minimal maintenance requirements.

  • Mature Size: 30cm tall
  • Spread: 40cm spread
  • Growth Rate: Moderate spreading groundcover habit
  • Hardiness: Hardy in the UK down to temperatures of -10 to -5 degrees Celcius (RHS hardiness rating H4)
  • Soil Requirements: Well-draining, neutral to alkaline soils
  • Aspect: Full sun essential for optimal flowering

Flowers

The showstopping feature of Helianthemum Cerise Queen is its profusion of single, vibrant cerise-pink flowers that create an intensely colourful effect. Each saucer-shaped bloom measures approximately 2-3cm across and displays stunning bright pink petals with a silky texture that catches the light beautifully. The rose-shaped flowers appear in short clusters, creating profuse blooms that can smother well-grown plants in a spectacular display of vivid colour.

Foliage

The attractive grey-green foliage provides a perfect backdrop to showcase the vibrant flower display. The small, narrow leaves are evergreen, creating an attractive fine-textured carpet that maintains garden structure throughout the year. The neat foliage complements the brilliant pink flowers whilst providing year-round interest and structure.

Growth Habit

Cerise Queen forms a compact, spreading evergreen shrub that gradually develops into effective groundcover. This carefree variety creates a naturally dense, low-growing habit that provides excellent weed suppression whilst maintaining an attractive, tidy appearance throughout the growing season. The spreading nature makes it ideal for covering challenging garden areas with minimal maintenance requirements.

Soil Requirements

This adaptable plant grows well in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. It demonstrates excellent tolerance for poor, sandy, or gravelly conditions and proves particularly well-suited to gritty, well-drained soils typical of rock garden environments. Heavy clay soils require improvement with coarse grit or sharp sand to ensure adequate drainage, as waterlogged conditions can prove detrimental.

Light Requirements

Full sun exposure is essential for optimal flowering performance and maintaining the compact growth habit. Being adapted to Mediterranean conditions with plenty of sunshine, these plants flower best on full sun sites where they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Partial shade conditions will reduce flowering intensity and may create more open growth.

Watering Needs

Water until established during the first growing season, then sun roses become drought tolerant and require minimal supplementary irrigation. This drought-resistant plant actively thrives in hot, dry conditions once the root system is fully developed, making it ideal for water-wise gardening approaches and challenging sites.

Planting

  • Timing: Plant from spring through early autumn for optimal establishment
  • Spacing: Space plants 35-45cm apart for effective groundcover development
  • Site preparation: Ensure excellent drainage by incorporating grit into heavy soils
  • Positioning: Choose the sunniest available location for maximum flowering impact
  • Soil improvement: Avoid rich organic matter which can encourage soft growth

Maintenance

Helianthemum Cerise Queen is refreshingly easy and reliable, requiring minimal maintenance once established. Light trimming after the main flowering flush helps maintain compact growth and often encourages a second wave of blooms. Avoid cutting back into old, woody stems to prevent damage to the plant structure.

Feeding

These Mediterranean plants typically require minimal feeding when grown in appropriate well-drained conditions. Excessive fertility can reduce flowering and create soft growth that is less hardy. Generally, feeding is unnecessary and often counterproductive for optimal performance.

Rock Gardens

Cerise Queen excels in rock garden settings where its drought tolerance and spreading habit prove invaluable. Plant in crevices between stones or at the base of larger rocks where it can cascade naturally, providing brilliant pink flower displays against grey stone surfaces with minimal maintenance requirements.

Alpine Collections

This variety works excellently in alpine gardens where its compact habit and resilience to harsh conditions prove particularly valuable. The vibrant cerise-pink flowers provide welcome colour intensity in specialist collections whilst the plant's reliability ensures consistent performance year after year.

Front of Border

Use at the front of hot, sunny borders where the low, spreading habit creates neat definition with spectacular colour impact. The brilliant cerise-pink flowers complement both pastel and bold colour schemes whilst the extended flowering period ensures consistent garden performance.

Ground Cover

Cerise Queen serves as excellent groundcover on sunny banks and slopes where its spreading habit provides effective coverage whilst creating stunning colour displays. The dense foliage suppresses weed growth whilst the deep root system helps stabilise soil on challenging sites.

Container Growing

Specimens work excellently in large containers, alpine troughs, or raised beds where drainage can be precisely controlled. This allows cultivation in areas with unsuitable soil conditions whilst enabling strategic positioning for maximum visual impact of the vibrant flowers.

Wildlife Gardens

The vibrant spring to autumn blooms attract bees and other pollinators, making valuable contributions to wildlife-friendly garden schemes. The extended flowering period provides consistent nectar sources throughout the growing season when reliable colour sources are particularly valuable.

Companion Planting

Cerise Queen works beautifully with other Mediterranean plants such as lavender, rosemary, and santolina that share similar growing requirements. Combine with ornamental grasses like Festuca glauca for textural contrast, or plant alongside other rock roses in complementary colours for extended seasonal interest. Silver-leaved plants such as Artemisia provide excellent foliage contrast to enhance the brilliant pink flower display.

Potential Issues

Cerise Queen is generally pest-free and disease-free when grown in appropriate well-drained conditions. Poor drainage represents the primary threat to plant health, potentially leading to root rot during persistently wet periods. Individual flowers are short-lived, but on well-grown plants in full sun the bloom succession is continuous, ensuring consistent colour throughout the flowering season.

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring: Fresh grey-green foliage emerges with developing flower buds
  • Late Spring/Early Summer: Peak flowering period with masses of brilliant cerise-pink blooms
  • Summer: Continued profuse flowering with continuous succession of new blooms
  • Autumn: Extended flowering often continuing until first frosts
  • Winter: Evergreen foliage provides year-round garden structure and subtle colour

Helianthemum Cerise Queen represents exceptional value for gardeners seeking reliable, vibrant groundcover that excels in challenging conditions. Its combination of brilliant cerise-pink flowers, drought tolerance, extended blooming period, wildlife benefits, and minimal maintenance requirements makes it an essential plant for sustainable modern gardening where both dramatic colour impact and practicality are paramount.

Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email orders@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Alpines are a group of perennials that  generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.

As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.

It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.

By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
