Description of each Plant you will Receive

  • 1x Amelanchier lamarckii (supplied height: 60-80cm) - a showy shrub/small tree that bears masses of wide white flowers throughout spring. It is a deciduous variety with leaves opening coppery-red, turning to soft green in summer and then to shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn.
  • 3x Berberis julianae (supplied height: 25-30cm) - a dense, strong growing, evergreen shrub which creates an excellent, impenetrable hedge bearing very long thorns and spiny margins to the leaves. It bears clusters of yellow flowers in late spring which are sometimes red-tinged at the edges. Foliage is glossy, dark green and turns red in autumn.
  • 1x Buxus Sempervirens (supplied height: 25-30cm) - a dense evergreen shrub that is quite slow growing yet very long lived. Its purpose is primarily for hedging and topiary. However, it has all the characteristics of a superb border shrub too. The dark green foliage is thick and present year round.
  • 2x Cornus alba 'Aurea' (supplied height: 40-60cm) - a lovely hardy deciduous shrub which produces a stunning display of large crisp yellow leaves in spring followed by florets of small white flowers in June. In autumn the new stems turn crimson and remain to brighten up the winter months - making this plant very attractive all year round.
  • 3x Cornus alba 'Sibirica' (supplied height: 40-60cm) - dark green foliage, turning red in autumn with heads of creamy-white flowers, which are succeeded by rounded, white fruits, often tinged blue. A deciduous, upright shrub with scarlet young shoots in winter, ideal for flower arrangements and brightening a garden border in winter.
  • 1x Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' (supplied height: 60-80cm) - a beautiful, deciduous, dense shrub which shows lovely rich golden stems in winter. It is a very hardy plant that is adaptable to most conditions and soil types. It can be grown in sun or shade and will thrive in the most fertile, well drained soils. The plant bears eye-catching stems which are very useful for providing winter colour to parks or gardens. It is particularly effective in winter when grown next to Cornus Alba (red stems).
  • 3x Cotoneaster franchetii (supplied height: 40-60cm) - small pink tinged, white flowers in the early summer, followed by a profusion of oblong, bright orange/red fruits. This evergreen or semi-evergreen arching shrub bears oval, grey-green leaves that are white beneath. Avoid waterlogged soils.
  • 2x Cotoneaster lacteus (supplied height: 40-60cm) - shallow cup-shaped white flowers grow from early to mid-summer. Long lasting red berries are carried in massive clusters in autumn/winter. An evergreen, arching shrub with oval, dark green leaves, a excellent choice for hedging, space at 600mm centres.
  • 3x Hypericum 'Hidcote' (supplied height: 25-30cm) - a compact, lush semi-evergreen shrub which bears rose-like, waxy, golden yellow flowers between July and September. These are produced on reddish, twiggy stems above dark green, lance-shaped leaves. The flowers, which appear throughout the summer, are unusually large and slightly fragrant, measuring about 8cm across in a cupped shape.
  • 1x Lonicera pileata (supplied height: 15-30cm) - a dense, bushy variety with a spreading growth habit and angular branches which are clothed with masses of small, glossy, mid-green leaves. It makes a perfect, fast-growing low hedge and produces small, creamy-white flowers in late spring followed by translucent purple berries that are very attractive to birds in the autumn.
  • 2x Mahonia aquifolium (supplied height: 25-30cm) - medium sized, evergreen, prickly shrub bearing dense clusters of yellow flowers in the spring. During autumn and winter it produces black fruits providing a vital source of food for birds, and the leaves also take on hues of purples.
  • 1x Malus sylvestris (supplied height: 60-80cm) - a native deciduous tree that bares dense clusters of pink flowers in early May followed by fruit in autumn. Can be planted as tree but also makes excellent addition to a native hedge.
  • 1x Prunus padus (supplied height: 60-80cm) - a spreading, deciduous tree or shrub with toothed, dark green leaves, elliptical in shape which turn red or yellow in autumn. Clusters of fragrant bowl shaped white flowers form in spring, followed by small, bitter black fruits.
  • 1x Prunus Otto Luyken (supplied height: 20-30cm) - spikes of white flowers in late spring, followed by cherry-like red, then blackberries. An evergreen, very dense bush with stiff glossy, dark-green leaves.
  • 2x Rosa canina (supplied height: 60-80cm) - an arching deciduous shrub with mid-green foliage, stems covered in hooked spines and pale pink or white flowers, either solitary or in small clusters appearing in early summer, followed by ovoid red fruits.
  • 2x Rosa rugosa (supplied height: 60-80cm) - Rosa rugosa are upright shrubs with prickly stems. They bear glossy, wrinkled leaves and fragrant, single or semi-double flowers in summer and autumn, usually followed by large, tomato-like red hips.
  • 1x Sambucus nigra 'Aurea' (supplied height: 40-60cm)- a vigorous deciduous shrub that grows beautiful golden yellow leaves arranged along the stem in a pinnate formation. In summer it produces masses of stunning pannicles of fragrant creamy white flowers followed by an autumnal flurry for dark purple fruit that provide an excellent food source for local wildlife.

Please Note: Pack contents may be changed, depending on availability, to help us manage stock levels but you will still receive a great selection of plants of comparable value and quality.

Bare Root is usually dispatched between early November and late March. Exact dates vary year to year depending on the weather. We cannot guarantee availability for a certain date at the beginning or end of the season.

Important Bare Root Care

As soon as you receive your bare root plants place the items upright in a bucket of clean water immediately leaving them for at least 2 hours. Only take plants out as you need them for planting.

Bare root plants must always be planted with wet roots, it’s not good enough to plant them dry and water them after planting.

Bare root plants should only be planted in good quality, free draining soil to the level they have been grown at nursery. Always make sure they are ‘healed in’ well and watered immediately after plating and whenever there are 3 or more days of dry weather, in particularly hot periods you may need to water daily during the first year.

Q: When is bare root season?

A: Our bare root season usually runs from November to March but it can depend on the weather conditions, we'd always recommend buying at the end of autumn rather than waiting for spring.

Q: Does the plant size include the roots?

A: No, all bare root plant sizes quoted exclude the roots.

Q: What size plants will I receive?

A: Stock size varies through the season, our 'Plant Size' are give as a guide and you will receive plants somewhere in that range. We are unable to specify exactly how tall the plants will be within that range.

Q: How old will the plants be?

A: Most of our 'Plant Sizes' include the age of the plant, this is shown as a sum e.g. 1+2 which in this case would indicate that the plants are 3 years old. The first number is how long the plant has spent in the seedbed and the second is the number of year it has spent lined out in the field. Where the sum starts with a 0+ this indicates that the plants were grown from a rooted cutting.

Q: Can I get a discount for bulk purchases?

A: We offer a discount banding on bare root plants making them cheaper the more you buy, see the table on each page for details of the price within each band.

Q: Do I need canes?

A: Bamboo canes are perfect for giving young saplings, hedging plants, climbers and other tall shrubs the support they need when they start to establish. Unless you are planting in a completely sheltered spot with very little chance of wind then we would always recommend using a cane for support.

Q: Do I need rabbit guards?

A: Spiral Rabbit Guards are the most popular, low cost tree protection for young saplings, seedlings, transplants and hedging plants from browsing animals such as voles, mice, rabbits and hares. Spiral Rabbit Guards have the ability to grow and expand with the growing tree, providing a sheltered environment for the tree. It's hard to say for certain if you will require the extra protection a rabbit guard provides, if your are aware of a particular pest problem in your planting location then we would recommend using them. Rabbit Guards are not suitable for 'evergreens' please see 'Shrub Shelters' for a suitable evergreen protection method.

Q: What is a shrub/tree shelter?

A: Shrub/Tree Shelters are similar to rabbit guards but are designed for use on evergreens that would sweat and die in rabbit guards. We supply shrub/tree shelters as a kit which includes the shelter, 1 Stake and 2 cable ties, one kit is required per plant.

Q: Do I need shrub/tree shelters?

A: If you are aware of any specific pest problems in your planting area then we would recommend using a shrub/tree shelter to give your young trees or hedging plants that extra protection.
