Asparagus 'Mondeo' delivers consistently thick, uniform spears renowned for their superior taste and tender texture. As an all-male hybrid variety, it channels all its energy into spear production rather than seed formation, ensuring every harvest meets the highest culinary standards. The robust spears maintain their quality throughout the extended picking season, making this variety perfect for both immediate consumption and preserving.
This variety excels in yield performance, producing significantly more spears per plant than traditional asparagus types. The extended harvest window from early April through to late June provides gardeners with an abundant supply of fresh asparagus during the peak growing season. Once fully established, 'Mondeo' maintains consistent high production levels year after year, making it an excellent long-term investment for any vegetable garden.
Asparagus 'Mondeo' thrives in a sunny, sheltered location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose a permanent spot in your vegetable garden that's protected from strong winds, as this will be the plant's home for many years to come. The warmest, most stable area of your garden will provide the best conditions for optimal spear development and flavour.
Success with asparagus begins with excellent soil preparation. 'Mondeo' performs best in rich, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.5-7.5. Heavy clay soils should be improved with generous additions of compost, well-rotted manure, and coarse grit to enhance drainage. Sandy soils benefit from organic matter to improve water retention and fertility. If drainage remains problematic, consider establishing a raised bed for optimal growing conditions.
Plant your asparagus crowns between March and May when soil conditions are favourable. Dig trenches 20cm deep and space crowns 30cm apart within rows, with 90cm between rows. Position each crown carefully with roots spread evenly and cover with 5cm of soil initially. As shoots emerge and grow, gradually backfill the trench throughout the growing season until level with the surrounding soil.
Patience during the first two years is essential for long-term success. Whilst a few spears may be harvested in the second year, it's best to allow all growth to develop into ferny foliage during the establishment phase. This approach builds strong root systems that will support decades of productive harvesting. The investment in patience during these early years pays dividends with superior yields once the plants mature.
Begin regular harvesting in the third year when plants are fully established. The productive season typically runs from early April through to late June, providing 10-12 weeks of continuous harvesting. Cut spears when they reach 15-20cm in height and before the tips begin to open. Use a sharp knife to cut cleanly just below soil level, taking care not to damage emerging spears nearby.
Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring before spear emergence, followed by regular feeding throughout the growing season. After the harvest period ends, allow the ferny foliage to develop fully as this feeds the crown for next year's production. Only cut down the yellowed foliage in late autumn after it has died back naturally. Mulch around plants in winter to protect crowns and suppress weeds.
Fresh Preparation: Steam or lightly boil for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp
Roasting: Toss with olive oil and roast at 200°C for 12-15 minutes
Grilling: Perfect for barbecue cooking with simple seasoning
Soups: Excellent for creamy asparagus soup using whole spears
Salads: Blanched spears add elegance to spring and summer salads
Preservation: Freezes well when blanched before storing
Plan carefully for asparagus placement as these plants will occupy the same space for 15-20 years. Ensure adequate room for the mature spread and consider how the tall summer foliage might affect surrounding plants. The attractive ferny growth can serve as an excellent backdrop for other vegetables or provide natural screening within the garden layout.
Asparagus 'Mondeo' grows harmoniously alongside tomatoes, herbs like parsley and basil, and many flower varieties. Avoid planting near onions, garlic, or potatoes which may compete for nutrients or inhibit growth. During the establishment years, utilise the space between rows for quick-growing crops such as lettuce, radishes, or annual herbs.
The key to asparagus success lies in thorough soil preparation, patient establishment, and consistent care. Invest time in creating the perfect growing environment initially, resist over-harvesting during early years, and maintain regular feeding throughout the growing season. With proper care, your asparagus bed will become one of the most rewarding and productive areas of your vegetable garden, providing years of gourmet harvests that surpass anything available in shops.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
