Tomato Seeds

There is no better vegetable to grow at home than the humble tomato. These beauties are immensely rewarding to grow with a wide range of varieties on offer, including big beef steak tomatoes, little sweet cherry tomatoes and the slightly larger cherry plum varieties (our tomato seed mix pack is a cost effective way of achieving a delicious mix of flavours if you want some variety, too). Whatever kind of tomato you like, you’re bound to find one to suit your taste. Tomatoes should be sown indoors, generally between March and May but it varies a little by variety, so check our product pages or the back of your seed packet for the specifics. Sow them in module seed trays which have been gently firmed down with the base of another tray and watered well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually and cover with 1/2cm (1/4in) layer of compost. Place in a propagator at 18-20 degrees Celsius or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When plants have 4 leaves transplant to 9cm (3.5in) pots of potting compost. Grow coolly and steadily. Minimum temperature 10 degrees Celsius. When the first flowering truss forms transfer to greenhouse border, grow bags or large pots 30cm (12in) apart in rows 60cm (24in) apart, minimum 10 degrees.
