Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkins are a spectacular form of squash which make both a fun autumn decoration as well as a tasty treat. Pumpkins are perfect for growing with children who enjoy seeing them swell into giant orange globes, harvesting and cutting faces in them for Halloween. Halloween may be the furthest thing from your mind when sowing summer crops in spring, but ignore at your peril, otherwise you may be faced with the prospect of choosing a sub-par pumpkin from the supermarket shelves instead of being able to harvest your own. Sow pumpkin seeds individually on edge in small pots of moist seed compost. Place in the warmth 15-18 degrees Celsius and cover the pots with cling film until seedings emerge. Gradually accustom young plants to conditions outside for 2-3 weeks before planting out to their cropping positions when danger of frost has passed. Choose Pumpkin Atlantic Giant seeds for giant pumpkins that can grow to more than 1000lb and taste delicious in pumpkin pies; or Pumpkin Crown Prince seeds for pumpkins with an attractive blue-grey skin and excellent storage qualities. Alternatively, Pumpkin Halloween seeds make for excellent lanterns and delicious pumpkin pie.
