Pansies, along with their smaller cousins violas, are cool-weather favourites, perfect for giving your garden a much-needed splash of winter colour when little else is in bloom. These versatile beauties are well suited to decorating beds, borders and containers with overlapping, heart-shaped petals in a range of deep and vibrant colours in shades of yellow, reds, oranges, purples, whites and violet, often two-tone with a distinct blotch of contrasting colour in the centre. They’re effective grown in mixed colour or monochrome schemes and combine well with other cool-season flowers such as trailing lobelia, primroses, violas and sweet alyssum. Pansies sown early in the year (Feb – April) are best grown as annuals as they tend to get leggy in the summer but will stand up well to frost, bouncing back from low single digit temperatures. Sowings made from May onwards are best grown as biennials and may not flower until the second year. Breeders have created cultivars with colourful flower “faces”, which are edible and may be used to decorate home-made cakes. They combine well with spring and winter flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and tulips. Deadhead faded flowers regularly to improve the appearance of your displays and encourage a second flush of blooms.
