Nigella (Love in a Mist) Flower Seeds

Nigella or “Love in a Mist” is an old-fashioned, cottage garden classic with beautiful, slightly mysterious blooms encased in a delicate, intricate web of flower bracts. It has an upright growth habit, typically reaching 30-60cm with blooms in cool shades of pink, white, blue and lavender purple. The blooms make fabulous cut flowers while the foliage makes the perfect vase filler. Native to rocky parts of southern Europe and north Africa, Nigella is a must-have for any cutting garden while also being well-suited to the cottage garden as well as informal, meadow-style plantings. These well-loved annuals also work well in patio container arrangements where the light, airy, fennel-like leaves contrast beautiful with the bolder foliage of Bergenia plants and Lamb’s ears. Another design ideal is to sow love in a mist over spring bulbs to continue the display and avoid bare spaces once the bulbs have finished. If you can resist the temptation to cut the blooms before late summer, they’ll develop into quirky seed pods that look fabulous in fresh or dried arrangements. Nigella re-seeds prolifically, allowing you to re-grow this favourite annual year after year. Harvest seed pods while firm, before they’ve split open and dry them in a cool, dry place.
