Potentilla plants
Potentilla are hardy, small deciduous shrubs valued for their long bloom time with 5-petalled, sauced-shaped flowers in a range of colours spanning yellows, whites, pinks and reds from May right through to September. Commonly known as shrubby cinquefoil, they are easy to grow, popular and versatile landscaping shrubs well suited to growing in groups at the front of the shrubbery, mixed border, cottage garden or rockery. They are also particularly useful for growing as ground cover on slopes to help with erosion control and firescaping or as a low, informal flowering hedge. Potentilla have an open, sturdy, shrubby growth habit and are well-suited to urban environments and coastal locations, standing up to drought, air pollution and salt-laden air. They are unfussy about soil type providing it’s well drained and will thrive in sun or partial shade. Potentilla tolerate hard pruning and can even be rejuvenated by cutting right back to ground level, if required to restore their form.
