Commonly known as rock rose, Cistus plants produce papery blooms in shades of whites and pinks during the summer. These are beautiful but short-lived with a whole new crop opening every morning before falling at nightfall. Some Cistus flowers have distinctive maroon markings at the base and are produced above a compact mound of evergreen foliage, reaching no more than a metre high and wide. Native to dry, rocky parts of the Mediterranean, rock roses love dry and sunny conditions, needing minimal care and attention and boasting strong drought tolerance - making them perfect for the rock garden or dry, sunny borders. Whilst they are deer resistant and tolerant of salt-laden winds, frost pockets must be avoided and they should be protected from the coldest winter days. Good drainage is key, so mix in plenty of grit when planting.
