Small and dwarf rhododendrons allow those with more modest gardens to indulge on these beautiful, acid-loving, woodland classics without fear of them growing beyond their designated bounds. Dwarf rhododendrons are often alpine varieties, growing less than 80cm (3 feet) tall and preferring cooler, moist conditions. We've also included some slightly larger varieties in this section which will reach up to 1.5 metres tall - you can use the "By height" Product filter if required. Small and dwarf rhododendrons are ideal for city gardens or courtyards where space it at a premium with their more compact habit giving a slightly more formal appearance than their larger counterparts.
They're small enough to fit nicely into the rock garden or nestle neatly beneath taller-growing shrubs in the border, as well as working well in containers in an ericaceous compost. They produce bell shaped or tubular flowers, typically from around April onwards and look particularly impressive when planted in groups of odd numbers of 3 or more, if space permits. Water using rain water where possible, especially in hard water areas where tap-water contains calcium that will neutralise their preferred acidic soil. Shade-loving annuals, such as impatiens, may be planted as a companion to rhododendrons to indicate when water is needed. Dead head faded flowers to encourage a continuous flush of fresh blooms.
