Rhododendron plants for acidic soil
The acid loving plant that first springs to mind for most gardeners is the rhododendron. Rhododendrons are grown for their abundant clusters of spectacular, large, distinctive flowers, usually produced in spring above an impressive structure of spirally arranged large, leathery evergreen leaves. Generally larger than Azaleas, Rhododendrons prefer a sheltered position in dappled shade and an acidic soil. They lend themselves well to informal plantings and woodland gardens, whilst dwarf alpine varieties are effective as rock garden plants. For deep red flowers in the rock garden consider Rhododendron Baden Baden or Rhododendron Dopey. Alternatively, Rhododendron Goldflimmer has attractive variegated evergreen foliage and Rhododendron Golden Wedding has stunning rich yellow flowers and makes a fantastic gift for that special occasion. For smaller spaces consider azaleas, these are a sub-set of the rhododendron family that are smaller growing, may be evergreen or deciduous and produce long-lasting spring flowers which clothe the entire bush, available in a wide variety of colours.
