Forsythia plants

Forsythia are one of the first shrubs to burst into bloom in the spring, flowering on bare stems from the beginning of March, just before the rich green leaves start to appear. The blooms clothe the upright stems in streaks of brilliant vibrant yellow, perfect for bringing early colour to shrubberies or mixed borders. Forsythia also displays fabulous autumn foliage colour, the leaves taking on stunning shades of bright red and orange before falling. Forsythia makes a tough, hardy, reliable border shrub or hedge for sunny or partially shaded conditions. It flowers most prolifically in full sun and grows best in a moist yet well drained soil – avoid planting in areas where it will sit with wet feet. Prune to maintain an open goblet shape, removing old and damaged branches to allow plenty of light and air flow through the framework of stems. Mulching with a 5cm (2 inch) layer of garden compost or bark chippings will help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a slow release fertiliser during the growing season and prune after flowering to maintain a tidy, compact shape. Named after William Forsyth, one of the founding member of the RHS.
