Enkianthus plants
Enkianthus are fabulous, acid-loving bushy deciduous shrubs producing an abundance of beautiful, delicate, bell-shaped flowers from April to June. These pendant flowers are set off against a backdrop of small alternate elliptical, rich green foliage which takes on excellent fiery autumnal shades of yellows, oranges and reds in the autumn. Native to the Himalayas and Japan with a slightly ornamental appearance, most varieties reach 2 to 2.5 metres tall, making them well suited to the middle of a shrub or mixed border. Enkianthus are easy to grow and trouble-free, well suited to growing in a shaded border or woodland garden. Best grown in full sun for the most abundant flowering display and best autumn colours, they are tolerant of strong winds and salt spray, making them suitable for coastal gardens, particularly on acid soils. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
