Corylus plants

Corylus are hazel plants - referring to both Common Hazel that's popular for mixed native hedges in the UK but also several of its more unusual relatives that have ornamental value for garden use. Both yellow- and purple-leaved varieties are available, bearing attractive catkins in early spring. The most popular garden variety, though, is Corylus Contorta (Corkscrew hazel), renowned for its unusual, twisted branches and stems, which can work well in floral arrangements. These deciduous shrubs work well in Japanese-style gardens to provide an interesting shape/structure contrast and some produce good crops of edible nuts that ripen between August and September.
