Dahlia plants
Well-loved for their long flowering season and eye-catching blooms available in a rainbow of colours, Dahlias are the highlight of the late summer garden. This popular, floriferous genus is perfect for filling out dry, summer borders with showy blooms from summer through autumn. Flowers range in size from lollipop style pompoms to gigantic 15-inch "dinner plate" blooms, often described by their shape e.g. "pom pom", water lily and collerette. Growing best in a light, free-draining soil, Dahlia plants are perfect for creating an instant impact in borders with shorter growing varieties being well suited to container growing and bedding. If you wish to grow dahlias as perennials in colder areas, dig up and store the tubers indoors over the winter as they're not frost hardy.
