Verbascum are tall, stately, upright border perennials producing attractive, long-lasting spikes of saucer-shaped flowers throughout the summer in soft hues of violet, purple, pink, rose and white, above a semi-evergreen basal rosette of rich green foliage. They're perfect for adding height and structure to the garden and attracting a raft of wildlife including bees, butterflies, caterpillars and hummingbirds. Verbascums work well in both bright and pastel-coloured planting schemes, contemporary designs or the cottage garden and their blooms are great for using in a wildflower bouquet of home-grown flowers. Easy to grow and drought tolerant, Verbascum are well suited to growing on stony hillsides and open woodland and also well-adapted to the gravel, cottage and rock gardens, or naturalised areas. Grow in a well-drained soil and cut faded flower stems back to ground level to prolong flowering.
