Primula primrose plants

Primulas are cheerful herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennials, producing bright-coloured salver- or bell-shaped flowers carried singly or in whorls from early spring to late summer above an attractive rosette of lush, oval green leaves. Hardy, unfussy and easy to grow, they come in a variety of forms and sizes, ranging from tiny rock garden plants to statuesque candelabras. Primroses are adaptable and versatile, making great additions to the urban garden, rock garden, cottage garden and woodland-style plantings. They also work well in containers or for naturalising the perimeter of a lawn. The most widely grown primulas are Polyanthus hybrids, which range in colour from white, cream and yellow to orange, red and pink, but there are other varieties available with flowers in shades of blues and purples. Primulas are woodland plants, preferring a position in a moist soil in partial or dappled shade and benefit from a mulch of organic matter or leaf mould.
