White is an effective, neutral colour in the garden, resembling purity and innocence. White flowers have a simple, clean, fresh appearance, helping create a sense of space. They are especially useful in shady corners of the garden where their luminescent blooms show up particularly well. White flowers are also more visible than other colours at dusk and combine well with blooms of almost any other colour in beds, borders or containers. Our favourite perennials with white flowers are Anemone 'Honorine Jobert' with its lovely, symmetrically-formed, single pure white blooms with attractive, buttery-yellow centres held on long, slender flowering stems all summer long; Aster 'Snow Cushion' bearing masses of sparkling, daisy-like, pure white flowers with long, narrow petals and attractive, rich golden-yellow centres, also in summer; and Echinacea purpurea 'White Meditation', an upright deciduous perennial coneflower producing white flowers with prominently orange cone centres above narrowly ovate dark green leaves.
