The colour purple is synonymous with luxury. Purple flowering perennials work well in most colour schemes, combining as effectively with bright oranges and reds as they do with creamy-whites and pastel shades. Bright purple is set off well against acid greens for a vibrant, eye-catching display while deeper purples can be used effectively with blue, pink and white flowering plants to create a more classic look. Purple flowers are also highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies with some showing an innate preference for purple blooms. Some of our favourite purple-flowering perennials are Geranium 'Ann Folkard' with its black-eyed, magenta-purple flowers in summer and autumn; Iris Ensata producing bright violet-purple blooms with a bold golden-yellow marking in the centre; and Salvia 'Ostfriesland' with its spectacular, upright spikes of richly-coloured, vivid violet-purple flowers produced in abundance across the whole plant from June to October.
