Perennials with black flowers are perfect for adding a unique touch of class and drama to flower beds and mixed borders. Perennials with flowers perceived to be black are in fact often deep shades of purple, burgundy or maroon, rather than a true jet black. Black combines and contrasts well with brightly coloured blooms such as oranges and yellows to create an exquisite display with a slight tropical appearance. Combining brightly colour flowers with black blooms actually helps to intensify their colour, providing contrast to allow them to stand out more easily. As with all dark coloured flowers, perennials with black blooms are best planted against a lighter backdrop to accentuate their colour tones. They’re also best sited in a sunny location to set the flowers off to best effect; avoid growing them in dark, dingy corners of the garden. Some of our favourite black flowering perennials are Aquilegia 'Black Barlow', Hemerocallis 'Voodoo Dancer' and Iris 'Black Knight'.
