Conifer plants for ground cover
Several low-growing conifers are well-suited to using as ground cover plants, offering a combination of colour and texture all year round. The foliage colour of many conifers looks particularly impressive when grown up against contrasting coloured rocks or decorative stone in the rockery garden, creating a beautiful naturalistic appearance. These evergreen, prostrate growers can also be used to naturally fill gaps in the border or provide distinct focal points in garden displays. Low growing and spreading conifers really come into their own on steep banks and slopes to cover areas they might not otherwise be planted. They’ll also help suppress weeds and can be handy to discretely cover manhole covers and other unsightly objects. Some of the varieties here are also slow growing, making them suitable for smaller, urban gardens for people with little time for maintenance who want their garden to look good year-round with minimal effort. Please note some of the varieties in this list such as yew plants and certain Thuja varieties would need to be trimmed to keep them low, rather than being ‘true’ ground covers.
