Luzula is an understated evergreen perennial grass that forms a loose clump of flexible, arching, ribbon-like foliage. It is unfussy, easy to grow and pest and disease resistant, making an excellent low-growing addition to shaded areas of the garden. Inconspicuous brown flowers are produced on arching stems from late spring to early summer, but Luzula is really grown as a foliage plant. Beautiful when grown in groups en masse with random placing to create a naturalistic appearance or as a weed-suppressing ground cover. It's at home in the woodland garden, excellent in difficult conditions of both dry and moist shade and combines well with other shade-loving plants such as hostas or ferns. Trim away any brown leaf tips with scissors in early spring. A versatile choice which self-seeds but is not invasive.
