Chamaecyparis hedging plants
Chamaecyparis, commonly known as false cypress, is a popular evergreen hedging plant, perfect for creating a dense naturalistic privacy screen with beautiful, textured foliage. They’re easy to clip into the desired shape and size, resilient, unfussy, drought tolerant once established and easy to grow with an average to fast growth rate. Chamaecyparis conifers come in a variety of foliage colours through greens, blues and golds. They have short, scaly leaves on flattened shoots, giving a fern-like appearance with narrow, white tinged markings underneath and a parsley-like scent when crushed. Pea-sized, scaly cones ripen from female flowers, starting off green before turning cream and then brown. Chamaecyparis will grow on most soils, except boggy ground that lies wet for any part of the year and reliably grows back even if trimmed back fairly hard. These evergreen foliage plants are well suited to creating a visibility screen, reducing noise from outside your garden and soaking up pollution toxins such as exhaust fumes, all whilst providing a home and shelter for wildlife and nesting birds. Careful planning and preparation is key – see our guide to hedging plants for more information.
