Whilst conifers are traditionally thought of as conical evergreen trees with a single, straight trunk and side branches, they actually come in a huge range of shapes and sizes, ranging from large trees to tiny dwarf varieties and low growing ground cover plants. They may have narrow, needle-like leaves like yew, fir and pine trees or broad, flat, strap-shaped foliage such as Chamaecyparis and thuja. Conifers are perfect for providing shape, structure and texture to borders and container displays. Colourful and architectural varieties may be used as a specimen plant in their own right, while others may be used as a backdrop or foil to showier flowering plants. Of course, conifers are always well renowned for creating a dense hedge or screen, knitting together well to keep out nosey neighbours or passers by and providing shelter from strong winds, making your garden a sanctuary of calm. Conifers are also famed for their distinctly scented resin which is secreted from the trunk and branches to protect the tree against attack by insects and avoid fungal infection of wounds.
