Nothing beats walking beneath an arch or sitting below a pergola clothed in richly perfumed flowering climbers. Scented climbers make a fabulous garden feature, adding height, colour and interest on a modest footprint. They work particularly well close to patios, seating areas, paths or simply parts of the garden you pass by often where you can soak up their heady perfume more often. Alternatively, training scented climbers up a wall of your house is a perfect way to waft some of their fragrance into the home. Popular varieties include honeysuckle, jasmine, chocolate vine, clematis armandii and wisteria. Honeysuckle can be grown up a wall or trellis, combing well with climbing roses, or even scrambled through a country hedgerow. Wisteria have pendant clusters of scented, pea-like lilac purple blooms in spring. Akebia quinata, commonly known as chocolate vine, is a more unusual, exotic variety producing beautiful purple flowers with a spicy fragrance.
