Pleioblastus are low-growing, evergreen, running bamboo plants, perfect for adding architectural flare and a tropical appearance to the front of a sunny border. It is a semi-dwarf grower with superb, ribbon-like foliage, often variegated, that is most intensely coloured when grown in full sun. Effective grown in groups or used as specimen plants in a sunny spot of the garden. It’s also suitable for growing in a container where it can be easily and reliably controlled. Pleioblastus includes a number of reliable and robust varieties that are widely considered to be some of the most desirable carpeting ground cover bamboos available. Commonly known as pygmy bamboo, it benefits from being cut back to ground level in winter to encourage a fresh production of foliage the following spring. As with all running bamboos, you'll need to contain the roots (easiest in our view) or undertake twice annual root pruning to prevent it from becoming invasive.
