Having fresh lettuce and salad leaves on tap is perhaps one of the most basic and essential parts of the vegetable garden. Lettuce can be grown in the ground, raised beds or containers and will provide a tasty year-round crop with regular sowings. The botanical name for lettuce is Lactuca sativa, coming from the Latin word “lac”, meaning milk’, referring to their milky sap. Apply a general purpose fertiliser to your soil 10 days before sowing to improve your crop and don’t forget to rotate your lettuce crop to prevent build-up of fungal diseases in the soil.
