Hypericum plants
Hypericum plants are beautiful, flowering ornamental shrubs producing masses of rich, buttercup yellow blooms above rich, dark green foliage from May through autumn. They are fast growing with a loose, spreading habit and slightly arching branches that make an effective weed suppressant. Hypericums are unfussy workhorses of the garden, flourishing under trees and on dry banks where little else will grow. In fact, they’ll survive almost anywhere except excessively wet soils. Hypericums are great for bringing colour and vibrancy to the shrub or mixed border or even using as a low flowering hedge. Most varieties are deciduous or semi-evergreen with the flowers being followed by attractive berries in the autumn before the leaves fall. Commonly known as St John’s wort, it requires minimal care and attention – simply remove any dead or damaged wood and trim to keep it within required bounds if needed in the spring and feed with blood, fish and bone in spring and autumn if you have poor soil.
