Conifer plants for hedging
Conifers are a popular choice for hedging plants and for good reason. These evergreen foliage plants form a dense privacy screen with colourful foliage and a natural, textured appearance. They’re easy to clip into the desired shape and size, unfussy, easy to grow and, in many cases, fast growing. Leylandii, for example, will put on 60-90cm new growth per year under good conditions, reaching most desired eventual heights in just a few years. Conifers fine fronds are also adept at soaking up pollution toxins such as traffic emissions; in fact, they’re proven to be more effective than trees at removing pollution particles from their immediate vicinity. The best hedging conifers can be found in this section and are mainly from the Chamaecyparis, Thuja and Yew families. Hedging plants are the cornerstone of any garden, creating an attractive boundary that has a big impact on privacy and enjoyment in your outdoor space. Hedges provide a visibility screen and reduce noise pollution, all whilst providing a home and shelter for wildlife and nesting birds. And varieties such as yew can be tightly clipped to give a more formal appearance with the added bonus of fleshy red berries from late summer.
