Shop our range of the best photinia hedging plants, perfect as a more colourful alternative to laurel for an evergreen hedge with bright red fresh new growth each spring. Photinia are marvellous, evergreen foliage shrubs grown for their brilliant red young leaves that provide an interesting contrast and variation against the mainly green mature foliage. It has a fairly open, rounded growth habit, providing some movement in the breeze and will thrive in full sun or partial shade. Photinia produces clusters of small white flowers in mid- to late-spring, sometimes followed by red fruits for year-round colour and interest. Native to North America and Asia, photinia grows 20-40cm per year depending on growing conditions and is easily clipped to the desired shape and size in spring or summer. Photinia red robin is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner and the most popular variety by far, whilst Photinia Little Red Robin has all of the same features but in a smaller package, lesser used for hedging given its smaller stature. Photinia is frost hardy but young plants should be protected in winter. Water newly planted hedges until established. See our hedging plant guide for more information and advice.
