Sweet Corn Seeds

There’s nothing quite as delicious as a fresh corn on the cob, harvested straight of the plant roasted with lashings of melted butter. Sweetcorn is an essential crop around the world with advances in breeding in recent years producing even sweeter and juicer crops. Sweetcorn is technically a grain, rather than a vegetable, comprising of rows of tightly packed golden yellow kernels. Seeds may be best sown from March to April, individually in small pots of moist seed compost 1cm (1/2in) deep. Start them off in the warmth 15-18 degree Celsius in light conditions but out of direct sunlight. Gradually accustom young plants to outdoor conditions 2-3 weeks before planting out to their cropping positions in May when the danger of frost has passed. Alternatively, sow straight outdoors in May, sowing two seeds 2cm deep at stations 45cm apart each way. When seedlings are 8cm high, discard the weaker at each station and leave the stronger one to develop. Your tasty crop of sweet corn will be ready to harvest between August and September, when the silks on the cob turn brown. Sweet Corn Alliance seeds are bred for the British climate and produce 20cm cobs with good disease resistance. Sweet Corn Goldcrest is a super sweet variety that’s delicious picked fresh and roasted or steamed. Sweet Corn Mini Pop seeds bear 5 or 6 delectable baby cobs per plant, delightful eaten raw in salads, steamed or in stir fries.
