No vegetable garden is complete without cucumber plants. These beauties are as delicious as they are familiar and at their most tasty when eaten fresh off the plant. Cucumbers are easy to grow and produce a generous harvest, whether grown indoors or outside. To grow the long green types found in the supermarkets, you’ll need a heated greenhouse or some way to maintain a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius during the ‘growing on’ phase between May and June. Cucumber are low in calories and incredibly refreshing, actually consisting of 96% water. They’re the perfect choice for anyone looking to have a cleaner, healthier diet. Cucumber is of course a mighty part of our iconic cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, a key ingredient in various salads and a garnish to kofta kebabs. Cucumber even has its place in many a refreshing summer drink, such as our favourite cucumber-lime-lavender spritzer mocktail, pea and cucumber cooler or cucumber-lime infused G&T. Cucumbers were found in India 4,000 years ago and they have since become the fourth most widely cultivated vegetable in the world.
