Rocket Seeds

Growing rocket from seed is a no-brainer for anyone who enjoys the peppery taste of this leafy vegetable as an accompaniment to dishes, as part of salads or added to sandwiches. Rocket has enjoyed a big rise in popularity in Britain over the last decade, while it has been widely cultivated around its native Mediterranean region for centuries. Growing your own rocket also allows you to try out different textures and flavours in a cost effective way. Rocket makes an excellent cut and come again crop and if you have limited space will succeed in containers, growbags, trays or tubs. Rocket grows best in full sun or partial shade in a well drained soil. Sow seeds thinly in a shallow, pre-watered row, lightly covering with a little soil. Keep soil moist, as dry conditions impair germination. Allow 30cm (12in) between rows and 2.5cm (1in) between plants. Small sowings made every few weeks during the summer should ensure a continuous supply. Choose Rocket Voyager seeds for a slow bolting variety with serrated, dark green leaves; or Rocket Wildfire for deep green, serrated leaves that is quick cropping and ideal for containers.
