Overview

Rose 'Dame de Coeur' represents one of the finest examples of classic hybrid tea excellence, combining spectacular deep cherry-red blooms with exceptional fragrance and reliable garden performance. This award-winning variety, which received the Silver Medal at Baden-Baden in 1958, produces magnificent large blooms measuring 13-14cm across with 35-40 petals that create perfect turbinated form with elegantly curved edges. The striking colour evolution from bright red buds to deep velvety cherry-red when fully open, sometimes darkening to shiny brownish-red, creates continuous visual interest throughout the flowering season. 'Dame de Coeur' combines classic hybrid tea elegance with practical garden performance, making it ideal for formal displays, cutting gardens, and anywhere exceptional fragrance and beauty are desired.

Key Features

The outstanding appeal of 'Dame de Coeur' lies in its spectacular large blooms that showcase perfect hybrid tea form with exceptional colour depth and substance. Each flower displays fully double form with 35-40 petals arranged in classic turbinated shape with slightly curved outer edges, creating blooms of remarkable elegance and presence. The unique colour characteristic begins with bright red buds that develop into deep velvety cherry-red, often darkening to shiny brownish-red when fully open, providing evolving colour interest throughout the bloom cycle. The substantial petal count ensures excellent weather resistance whilst maintaining the classic high-centred form prized in exhibition roses. The exceptionally strong sweet fragrance of medium intensity becomes most potent on hot, sunny summer days, creating memorable aromatic experiences that distinguish this rose from many modern varieties.

Growth Characteristics

This hybrid tea rose displays compact, bushy growth with strong upright habit, reaching 90cm in height with a similar spread, creating manageable proportions perfect for smaller gardens and formal displays. The vigorous yet compact nature ensures reliable flowering whilst maintaining an attractive, bushy form that fits well into diverse garden settings. The erect and bushy habit provides excellent support for the large flower heads, making this variety particularly suitable for cutting and formal garden applications where consistent performance and manageable size are important. The healthy dark green glossy foliage creates excellent backdrop for the spectacular blooms whilst maintaining attractive appearance throughout the growing season.

Flowering Performance

From summer through to autumn, 'Dame de Coeur' delivers exceptional flowering displays with abundant and permanent blooming that continues consistently throughout the extended growing season. The plant produces large, picture-perfect deep cherry-red blossoms with amazing strong fragrance, creating substantial visual and aromatic impact with excellent repeat flowering. The flowers develop slowly, allowing gardeners to appreciate the colour evolution from bright red buds to deep velvety blooms, whilst the substantial size ensures each flower creates significant garden presence. The abundant flowering nature typical of this variety means continuous colour throughout the season, with the large blooms providing spectacular displays that capture attention with their intense colour and powerful fragrance.

Growing Conditions

'Dame de Coeur' thrives in full sun or partial shade with fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, requiring good drainage whilst maintaining consistent moisture for optimal performance. The rose adapts well to various soil types including clay soils providing the ground does not lie wet, making it suitable for diverse garden conditions. Best performance occurs in sunny, sheltered positions where the intense fragrance can be fully appreciated and the colour development is optimised. The variety benefits from well-rotted organic matter incorporation and responds well to regular feeding to support the vigorous growth and large flower production. Good air circulation around the plant helps maintain healthy foliage whilst supporting the spectacular flowering performance.

Hardiness and Disease Resistance

This rose demonstrates good hardiness suitable for zones 4-6, making it adaptable to various temperate climates with appropriate care and positioning. The variety shows good resistance to specific diseases, though attention to preventive care and garden hygiene practices helps maintain optimal health. The healthy, glossy dark green foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, with natural resilience that supports the spectacular flowering displays. The robust constitution typical of well-bred hybrid tea roses means that with proper care and positioning, this variety provides reliable long-term garden performance with minimal intervention requirements.

Care and Maintenance

'Dame de Coeur' requires regular maintenance typical of hybrid tea roses to achieve optimal flowering performance and health. Apply general rose or shrub fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer, with regular deep watering during dry periods to support the vigorous growth and large flower production. Mulch with well-rotted organic matter in late winter or early spring to conserve moisture and improve soil structure. Annual pruning in March involves cutting one-year-old shoots back to 2-3cm to maintain compact shape and encourage strong new growth. Regular deadheading promotes continued flowering and maintains the spectacular display throughout the season.

Garden Applications

'Dame de Coeur' excels in formal rose gardens and mixed borders where its compact size and spectacular blooms can be fully appreciated. The manageable height and bushy habit make it ideal for front-of-border plantings, entrance gardens, and formal displays where consistent performance and exceptional fragrance are required. An excellent choice for beds, borders, and containers, this rose provides outstanding cut flowers with exceptional vase life and powerful fragrance. The compact dimensions make it particularly suitable for smaller gardens whilst still delivering substantial visual and aromatic impact through its abundant flowering displays and intense colour.

Container Growing

The compact growth habit and manageable size make 'Dame de Coeur' exceptionally well-suited to container cultivation for patios, balconies, and small gardens. The rose thrives in large containers where its powerful fragrance can be fully appreciated, making it perfect for terraces and seating areas where aromatic appeal enhances the garden experience. Choose containers at least 50cm wide and deep with excellent drainage, using high-quality multipurpose compost enriched with slow-release fertiliser. Container-grown specimens require more frequent watering and feeding than ground-planted roses, but the compact habit and exceptional fragrance make this worthwhile for gardens with limited space.

Seasonal Interest

Throughout the growing season, 'Dame de Coeur' provides exceptional seasonal interest that evolves beautifully with changing conditions. Spring brings the emergence of healthy glossy dark green foliage and the first bright red flower buds, building anticipation for the main flowering display. The spectacular blooms from summer through autumn provide months of deep cherry-red colour and powerful fragrance, with each flush creating renewed garden excitement. The attractive foliage remains healthy throughout the season, providing excellent backdrop for the spectacular flower displays, whilst the strong branching structure provides architectural interest during dormant periods.

Fragrance Profile

'Dame de Coeur' features exceptionally strong sweet perfume of medium intensity that becomes most potent on hot, sunny summer days, creating unforgettable aromatic experiences. The powerful fragrance carries well in garden air and makes this rose particularly suitable for sensory gardens and areas where aromatic appeal is important. The intense scent enhances the garden atmosphere whilst complementing the spectacular deep red blooms, creating truly memorable rose experiences. This makes it particularly valuable for cutting gardens and areas where both visual beauty and aromatic excellence are desired, with the fragrance being one of the variety's most celebrated characteristics.

Companion Planting

The deep velvety cherry-red colouring of 'Dame de Coeur' provides excellent opportunities for companion planting with complementary garden plants and striking colour schemes. The intense red colour works beautifully with white flowers for dramatic contrast, whilst purple and blue flowers such as lavender create sophisticated colour combinations. Silver foliage plants complement the deep red tones whilst pink flowers create harmonious displays. The compact habit and strong fragrance make it suitable for planting with aromatic herbs and perennials that enhance the sensory garden experience whilst providing layered fragrant displays throughout the growing season.

Heritage and Innovation

'Dame de Coeur' represents classic hybrid tea breeding excellence from 1958, created from the cross between 'Peace' and 'Independence' and awarded the Silver Medal at Baden-Baden for its exceptional characteristics. This heritage connection to two of rose breeding's most important varieties adds significant historical interest whilst providing proven garden performance. The variety demonstrates how classic breeding techniques created roses with lasting appeal, combining spectacular visual impact with exceptional fragrance that distinguishes it from many modern varieties. The old-fashioned romantic name reflects the variety's traditional garden appeal and enduring charm.

Award-Winning Excellence

The award acknowledges the combination of spectacular blooms, exceptional fragrance, and reliable performance that sets this rose apart from ordinary varieties.

How our roses are supplied through the seasons

All our roses are cultivated in an open field and are carefully dug up when the weather is optimal, typically in October or November. While other nurseries supply roses bare root, once our field-grown roses have been potted up we supply them freshly potted. This better protects the roots and helps keep them moist in transit, ensuring your roses arrive as healthy as when they left our nursery. So don’t be alarmed if the compost comes away from the roots when you remove them from the pot.

Pointing at Graft of Rose after Removing from Pot

The roses can remain in their pots over the winter, as long as they are properly watered and fed, but it's best to plant them out as soon as possible. If you do plant them straight away make sure the planting mix is prepared first, hold the root close to the top of the hole as you tip the pot upside down and try to keep as much compost as possible from falling away. They will already be pruned, so no additional pruning is needed except for trimming any dead tips. Regular pruning can start in late winter, the year after planting.
