Griselinia plants
Griselinia are popular evergreen hedging plants, perfect for creating a year-round dense hedge or screen, easily maintained at a height of between 1.5 and 6 metres tall. It has luxurious, glossy, apple-green oval foliage held on flexible upright stems with an average growth rate of 20-40cm per year. Commonly known as New Zealand Privet or New Zealand Broadleaf, its calming colour brings a relaxing ambience to the garden and makes the perfect foil to set off more vibrant flowering shrubs. For extra flair, consider Griselinia littoralis 'Variegata' with its attractive blotched cream variegation around the edge of the foliage and yellow-green flowers, reaching a more modest eventual height of around 2.5 metres tall. Griselinia is suitable for full sun to light shade and stands up well to strong winds and salt-laden air, making it suitable for coastal gardens. Potted Griselinia plants can be planted at any time of year providing the ground is not frozen or water logged and it will tolerant hard pruning to maintain its shape, if required.
