Cytisus plants
Cytisus is a fabulous flowering shrub producing masses of blooms with a sweet-pea like appearance in shades of yellow, pink, red and burgundy between April and June. Commonly known as Broom, it has an upright growth habit with long, slender, arching stems and small, ovate, rich green trifoliate deciduous foliage. Brooms typically reach an eventual height of 1 to 1.5 metres tall, making them well suited to the middle of a shrubbery or mixed border, thriving particularly well on poor, starved soils and ideal for smaller gardens. They’ll be happy in most sites and situations - just avoid growing on chalky soils and very wet areas where they will sit with wet feet. We recommend pruning back stems by up to half their length after flowering to keep to the desired shape and size and maintain a compact appearance. Cytisus 'Boskoop Ruby' is our most popular variety, producing an abundance of ruby-red, pea-like flowers which clothe the arching stems throughout late spring and early summer. It is a compact, deciduous variety with tiny leaves which are produced on whippy stems.
